It's About to Get Ugly in Beautyland

Well, this is going to hit the beauty blogging community like a case of Sephora-tester-induced-pinkeye. The FTC has declared that bloggers (beauty and otherwise) must now admit in their reviews "the material connections they share with the seller of a product or service." Out of the dozens of beauty blogs I read on a regular basis, all of which are clearly freebie-based, the ONLY one I have ever known to regularly disclose that the products are gifted is Jack & Hill. And I actually stopped reading that one a year ago when they barfed up a particularly clueless tribute to Sarah Palin. I'm petty like that.

Just for the record, I only review stuff I buy myself. I need the freedom to hate.

What I would prefer is for mags like Allure and InStyle to disclose that their "Best Ofs" depend on which companies have advertised in their mags. Leave the bloggers alone.

BTW, I'd love it if you'd review Mac's new greasepaint liner. It's gotten a lot of love on MUA but I wanna know your opinion. And can us older gals wear it? Love your blog!

Thank you for staying real!I swear I run out and buy or at least try everything you like, I am such a follower. You haven't steered me wrong yet. Can't find that Milani lip stuff. I just went from bleach blonde to dark brunette and I think red lips will top off the look nicely. Gotta start slow with a sheer and haven't found anything yet. Fingers crossed on Milani.

Kudos to you, I always appreciate honesty, and besides, your hating always makes me smile.
Maybe that's why all my friends are so grumpy and sarcastic too...
Also I tried a couple things you've recommended and I haven't been let down yet :) between you and MUA I'm set for life.

I think one of the main reasons so many blogs are basically useless is that they're too willing to be 'nice' when they've received a freebie. Vagueness is useless in a review.

I prefer bluntly honest reviews, good and bad. If a blogger gets specific about what they loathe, it's actually useful.

I agree with SusanSQ ... the FTC is just picking on an easy target. The mags hate bloggers - they make it pretty damn clear - but the mags are the worst offenders by far.

SusanSQ and Apocalypstick:

I have the MAC greasepaint liner in black (did you have any doubt?). I've used in on the lower waterline - it smears a little, but not in a bad way (think slightly smudgy wanna-be rocker, slightly sexy) and it stays on like a mutha!

The only problem I have is getting it OFF! Olive oil or baby oil does the trick...

Youtube needs this so bad. I had horrible experiences with beautychoice.com because I didn't know the reviewers got the stuff for free! I won't trust anything they say ever again. But I love your site.
