Summer in the City

Please forgive my absence lately but I've been so uninspired by new makeup this summer. Every single cosmetic company trots out a bronzer and a brown-and-turquoise eye shadow combination, every year, and I'm sick of it. I can't--and never could--wear any of those things. Seriously, the only things I've been putting on lately are black mascara, concealer, and Hibiscus, that Laura Mercier lipstain pot I was so in love with last spring. That's it. If I can manage gloss, I go with whatever's in my desk at work.

Another aspect of my laziness has been my hairstyle. I am constitutionally incapable of blowing it dry and/or straightening it on a day when it's going to be 90 degrees and humid. What's the point? So I actually bought something I saw in Lucky (only because there were no made-up adjectives in the copy to annoy me). The June issue recommended Motions Foaming Wrap Lotion--a mousse product you can find in the African American haircare section-- for perfect piecey, wavy, shiny hair. You just comb it through your damp hair and forget about it. I did it and--wow. It's great stuff. And really, really cheap!

Can this be used on other hair types for the same effect? My hair's corse and curly...for a white girl.

I am pretty sure it can! It's definitely worth a try! But I will try it on my curly-haired daughter if you want a guinea pig... (if you are reading this, Leah, JUST KIDDING, HONEY)

Hello, dahlin. I am in love with your blog. I faithfully check it daily...sometimes twice. You make me laugh and you don't only give advice for your skin/hair type. Usually not too pricey either!
Speaking of not too pricey...

I've heard rave reviews about this product. I was a bit nervous at first because it's by the company that does the Henna-and-Placenta masque treatments, and as a vegetarian that's not okay with me. It is very cheap but I hate buying things and never using them! heard anything about it, or any advice for a leave-in product I can use and then flat-iron my thick, wavy hair?

Jenny, because you are a hippie-dippie vegetarian (I am, too!) I think it's best to avoid the placenta product people. Blergh. BUT one thing that's awesome to do, and completely natural, is to put just the tiniest bit of coconut oil on your dry hair before flat-ironing. Make sure it's applied the length of your hair, because it needs to be everywhere the iron goes. Don't worry if your hair looks a little greasy when you first put it on--the heat will bake the moisture right into your hair and make it super shiny. You might want to practice with this to make sure you get the amount right before you go out, though. If you put too much oil in, you're gonna have to wash your hair and start all over again. But it's better than placenta!

Post a picture of your hair after using this product please! Also, please say what your hair type is. Sounds cool....

Sweet! I'm in to try it...especially if it is "really really cheap!"

Thank you very much for the coconut oil idea, and practicing advice! I'm glad it'll be chemical free :]

We might be hippies, but we only smell a little funny and we'll never get congestive heart failure. :]

OK - I picked this up yesterday...now I need a tutorial on how to use it.

Please?

Here's what I do: While my hair is still damp (but towel-blotted, not sopping), I comb through a blob--about golf ball sized for my shoulder length hair--of the mousse, then leave my hair the hell alone until it dries. I have piecey bangs so I kind of arrange them the way I want them to be, and they dry that way. That's it! Though I suspect it would be a good pre-blowdrying product as well. It just seems to tamp down the frizz factor.

What hair type do you have? I have fine, wavy, dry hair - which is quite the conundrum - I have to add moisture - but not so much that it lies flat on my head. Do you think this would work for me?

I just bought this a couple of days ago, and want to say that it is just as good on fine, straight, damaged hair like mine. I have layers, so I put it on all over before blow-drying and it's almost as good as using a straightening iron (gets rid of fuzziness like a champ)& also builds a bunch of body. I'm veggie too, so hope that it's not all animal tested and such, but this stuff rocks and is cheap.
